How To Measure A Window For Replacement

Jan 30, 2024

If you have discovered that your windows have cracks, they’re broken, or they have some major or minor issues then it is time you consider going for window replacement. Replacing a window needs accurate and precise measurements so that no further errors occur after replacement. When measurements are correct, you can be sure that the new window will not only be a perfect fit but also it will look aesthetically pleasing.

The slightest errors in measurement can lead to new windows either being too large or too small which can lead to hefty repairs and installations. To save yourself from this chaos, it is advised to take proper measurements. Let us give you a step-by-step guide on how to measure your windows for replacement.

Tools Needed for Windows Replacement

There are a few essential tools that you must have if you want your measurements to be accurate. Go to your local shop and buy them before you start on the replacement project. These necessary tools are as follows:

  • A measuring tape
  • A level
  • A pencil
  • Measurement form

Square Check of Windows

The first and foremost thing that you have to do to ensure you get the best replacement windows is the square check. If your windows don’t pass this test, then it is highly unlikely that you can even start the replacement project, rather you have to install a new one. The square check determines whether or not your existing frame has a 90-degree angle from all the corners. This assures that your window alignment is perfect. In order to measure this, start measuring diagonally from corner to corner. If the measurements do not align with each other or one part is slightly larger or smaller than the other then that means your window doesn’t pass square check. Well, it may be time to get a new window frame.

Measuring Window Width

Once you are sure that your window frame is a perfect 90 degrees then it is time to measure the width of your windows. You have to take three measurements and use the smallest one.to do this you have to measure the window from jamb to jamb. For the bottom measurements, measure from the right jamb to the left one, excluding trims. Similarly, measure the width from the middle and top part from the left to right jamb.

Measuring Window Height

Just like how you measured the width of the window, the height will be measured in the same way. Once again, take three measurements and use the smallest one from them. Starting vertically from the left, measure from the sill to the head. Then measure vertically from the middle and then from the right at the last. Once you have done all the measurements, use the smallest one to order your perfectly sized windows.

Measuring Window Depth

Depth is one of the most challenging aspects to be measured. The depth ensures that the window will sit well with the frame. If the measurements of depth are wrong, it could lead to the new windows sticking out and causing different critical issues. To check the depth, you have to measure the entire window opening from the inside to the outside.

Retrofit Window Replacement

If you are a homeowner who is looking for window replacement for home but doesn’t want to go for a full replacement then retrofit replacement is the ideal option. It is basically a method where a new window is installed into a preexisting one without having to go for a full replacement. It is typically less expensive and looks aesthetically pleasing, this is why this option is growing more popular day by day.

Conclusion

Choosing to replace a window may seem like a difficult task but with the right guidance, it can turn into a pretty simple one. When you are all set and determined to replace your windows yourself, taking appropriate measurements will save you from paying again and again for replacement. Correct measurements will help you in determining the exact size and thus the whole replacement project will become a piece of cake for you.
